Most visits to RMZ result in either no sightings at all of the pumas (aka cougars, or mountain lions) or a just a fleeting glimpse – so it is thrill to get clear views of these magnificent cats.

Puma (Latin name: (Puma concolor) ) is a mammal of the Felidae family, native to the Americas.
Pumas, are also known as cougars or mountain lions, depending on different regions. It is the second biggest cat in the Western Hemisphere, only the jaguar is bigger. Technically the puma is classified as a Small Cat, rather than a Big Cat!
It is classified as a Small Cat as it can purr – in cannot roar – it lacks the specialized larynx and hyoid apparatus of Panthera. Like domestic cats, pumas vocalize low-pitched hisses, growls, and purrs, as well as chirps and whistles. They are well known for their screams.

As a “Small Cat” – it can be twice as heavy as a leopard! The average size of an adult puma is about 60Kg, much the same as a normal adult male leopard. Very large pumas have weighed as much as 118Kg

This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, extending from Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. An adaptable, generalist species, the puma is found in every major American habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the American continents after the jaguar, and the fourth heaviest in the world, along with the leopard, after the tiger, lion, and jaguar, although it is most closely related to smaller felines.

A capable stalk-and-ambush predator, the cougar pursues a wide variety of prey. Primary food sources include ungulates such as deer, elk, and bighorn sheep, as well as domestic cattle, horses, and sheep, particularly in the northern part of its range, but it also hunts species as small as insects and rodents.

Pumas are slender and agile cats. Adults stand about 60 to 76 cm (2.0 to 2.5 ft) tall at the shoulders. Males have an average weight of about 53 to 72 kilograms (115 to 160 pounds). In rare cases, some may reach over 118 kg (260 lb). Female average weight is between 34 and 48 kg (75 and 105 lb). Size is smallest close to the equator, and larger towards the poles.

Cougars can be almost as large as jaguars, but are less muscled and powerful; where their ranges overlap, the cougar tends to be smaller than average. The cougar is on average as heavy as the leopard. Cougar coloring is plain (hence the Latin concolor) but can vary greatly between individuals and even between siblings. The coat is typically tawny, but ranges to silvery-grey or reddish, with lighter patches on the under body including the jaws, chin, and throat.

pallas cat

pallas’s cat, also known as the manul, is a small wild cat of central asia. it is about the size of a house cat, at 60cm long, not including its 25cm tail, and an average weight of 3.6kg. its fur is ochre in colour with vertical bars, which are sometimes not visible due to the thick fur.

pallas cats are the oldest living species of the modern genus felis. this feline, along with the extinct martelli’s cat, were the first two modern cats to evolve from pseudaelurus approximately 12 million years ago.

this cat has several features which distinguish it from other felines. most strikingly, it has round pupils. its legs are short, its rump is rather bulky, and its fur long and thick. the combination of its stocky posture and thick fur makes it appear especially stout and plushy. its coat changes with the seasons: the winter coat is greyer and less patterned than the summer coat. the ears are set low and give the cat a somewhat owl-like appearance. because of its relatively flat face, it was once thought that pallas cats was the ancestor of the persian cat breed.

pallas cats inhabit the asian steppes up to heights of 4000m. they are thought to be crepuscular hunters and feed on small rodents, pikas and birds.
